Training Is Like A Bank Account – Are You Building Wealth or Are You Going Broke?

 

The typical commercial gym is full of people who are doing too many exercises that don’t give them good results for the effort they are putting in.

Things like directly training biceps and triceps are a waste of time and effort for anyone who has been training less than 1-2 years.

You need to build up a foundation of strength in the big, compound lifts like deadlifts, squats, bench press, overhead press, dips and chin-ups before you will see much results from doing isolation movements like bicep curls or tricep extensions.

This is largely due to the fact that you can handle a much larger load with a compound movement like a chin-up or bent over row, than you can with an isolation movement like a bicep curl. As a result, you will be engaging a much larger amount of muscle fibers.

As a way of illustration, have you ever seen anyone who could bench press respectable weights or bang out 15 chin-ups in a row who had spaghetti arms?

Everything you do in the gym is like withdrawing money from a bank account. You must be regularly “depositing funds” into that account or you will be broke before you know it.

Rest, recovery and nutrition are these “deposits”, and you must make sure that withdrawals (training) don’t exceed deposits (recovery and nutrition). This is why proper exercise selection and programming, as well as prioritising your rest, recovery and nutrition strategy is so important for realising your goals, both in the short term and the long term.

There is a saying in the fitness industry that “there is no such thing as over training, only under recovering”. Most people (myself included for many years), don’t see the results they are hoping for, and as a result, add more and more intensity and volume to their workouts, which only makes the problem worse.
